In conversation with Catrine Svellingen

Catrine Svellingen was working with designing stores that would be both inspiring and pedagogic when her Instagram account gained more and more followers who liked her aesthetic. This led to assignments in both interior design, styling and visual storytelling. We got in touch when Catrine was decorating her new house and needed curtains.

In the living room I chose Nizza Mano Morbida, a lovely semi-transparent curtain that gives privacy, but at the same time lets the light in and creates a beautiful soft light in the room. The generous ceiling height and the large windows needed the warm feeling that curtains give, and together with the greige colour choices, this merges into a nice whole.

A: In your own words, how would you describe your style?

CS: A playful, personal and timeless style with functional solutions. A good mix of materials, own solutions, vintage and design.

A: What feeling did you want to achieve when choosing fabrics for the house?

CS: I wanted to create cozy, comfortable and beautiful rooms, where it is good to be and where you find peace.

In the bedroom, I wanted a dreamy feeling and chose Grasse Mano Morbida which gives a soft and nice drape, chosen in a colour that blends in well with the wall. Here I wanted a dense curtain that helps to provide the calm I need.Having a good balance between aesthetics and functionality is important, choosing curtains that create the feeling and function you want for the room.

A: Your favorite colour? Why?

CS: Love a neutral colour palette. Greige colours are a favorite. They are neither completely grey nor completely beige, but a perfect harmony in between. These are colours that help to create the warm, lovely feeling that I like.

A: What is a good home for you?

CS: For me, a good home is where you find complete peace, can lower your shoulders and just be. A home that it is warm, personal and reflects those who live there. Functionality is also something I value, good and smart solutions that make everyday life easier.

Everything I do, I do with emotion, and that was also the case with this house. It’s all about creating a home that feels good to be in.

A: Which is your favorite room?

CS: I am very happy with the open solution between the living room and the kitchen, the generous ceiling height and the large windows. The fact that we have divided the room into several zones means that we get to use the surface in a more functional way, while at the same time it covers more needs. Here you can choose to be social or relax on your own on the daybed with music in your ear. A warm and comfortable room where we can lower our shoulders and just be, this is where the finest moments are created!

A: Do you have interior design tips to share? Preferably when it comes to curtains but in general as well.

CS: Good planning is perhaps the most important thing you do to create a good result, taking the time to find out what you want and what you will use a room for. There is a lot of inspiration out there, so spend time looking in magazines and on social media. Be true to who you are and decorate with your heart, then you can’t go wrong.

A: Where do you get inspiration from?

CS: Having an open mind, noticing the details and the light around me……then I find inspiration in everything from the small things in everyday life to nature, people or just walking around in the city.
