Vandra Rugs – rugs of surplus fabrics
A few years ago, we initiated a collaboration with the Swedish brand, Vandra Rugs. Renowned for crafting handwoven rugs that seamlessly marry design with exemplary craftsmanship.
Their atelier, situated in the Carpathians, Ukraine, is the hub where these luxurious rugs come to life, with a workforce predominantly comprising women who serve as weavers and hold managerial roles.
Vandra Rugs, as a Swedish lifestyle brand, is dedicated to upholding principles of respect and sustainability towards both humanity and the environment. Their atelier, situated in the Carpathians, Ukraine, is the hub where these luxurious rugs come to life, with a workforce predominantly comprising women who serve as weavers and hold managerial roles.
The genesis of our collaboration with Vandra Rugs stemmed from a vision of repurposing our surplus fabrics, finding a harmonious expression in the creation of classic rag rugs. In our initial rug designs, we adhered to a monochromatic palette, selecting colours inspired by the bestsellers and favorites in our collection, namely green, apricot, and pink. Seeking to infuse depth, we artfully blended two or three tones of the Venere and Rivoli fabrics on a neutral linen
The chosen fabrics represent several enduring collections at Astrid, serving as a tribute to our two decades of textile production. The outcome was five entirely distinctive rugs, each characterized by our signature colour combinations.
For the next round of rugs, we retained the technique of blending two or three colour tones seamlessly while introducing multiple colour blocks to fashion striped rugs. These rugs were envisioned to adorn the raw concrete floor of our exhibition space at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in February 2023.
